Mary Lee Fults was born in Henderson, KY on August 5, 1926 to Carl E. Sheffer and Nellie T. Sheffer. Mary was preceded in death by her four siblings: Ronald Sheffer, Retha Sheffer, Eileen Sheffer Stamm, and Ruth Sheffer Mead. The family was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana and Mary graduated from George Washington High School in 1944. She met Robert G. Fults following graduation. Robert was on leave from the US Marine Corp. Bob and Mary married in Santa Monica, California on June 17, 1945. Mary and her sister Eileen travelled from Indianapolis to Santa Monica by Greyhound bus for 5 days prior to the wedding.
Mary and Bob resided in the San Diego area until his discharge at the end of WWII. They moved to Indianapolis and built a house where they lived for 15 years. During that time, they gave birth to 3 children: Marilyn Jean, Robert Duane, and Gerald Alan.
In October of 1959, White Motor Company transferred the family to Michigan and they bought a home in Holt, where all three children graduated from high school. During this time, Mary worked in retail part time as well as full time homemaker. Following Robert’s retirement, he and Mary built a new home and moved to the Canadian Lakes area of Michigan. For several years, Mary and Bob wintered in East San Diego County, and officially moved to Spring Valley in 1985.
Robert passed away September 3, 1998 and Mary moved into a condo in the Rancho San Diego Area, where she resided until 2007, when she moved into Mt. Miguel Covenant Village. Mary enjoyed 12 years in independent living at Mt. Miguel. She was an active volunteer at the Thrift Korral through Grossmont Hospital Volunteers for 13 years. During her years at Mt. Miguel, she volunteered at the Gift Shop and the Repeat Boutique.
Mary enjoyed travelling with her family throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom and France. She travelled via auto, motor home, cruise ship and airplane, but never again on a Greyhound bus! Mary also enjoyed day trips with her Mt. Miguel friends, attended the many social events at MMCV, and copious games of Scrabble with village friends.
