

PHILLIP (PHIL) R. SAAL of El Cajon, CA was born February 13, 1943 in Goshen, IN, the son of Lewie and Becky Saal. He grew up in Goshen and graduated from Goshen High School. He joined the Navy in 1962 and served three tours of duty in Viet Nam on two different destroyers.
Upon discharge from the Navy he began to work for UPS and continued with them for 20 years. From UPS he became an employee of the Teamsters Union and became the Secretary/Treasurer of Teamsters Local 542 in San Diego.
He was a member of Shadow Mountain Community Church where he served as a deacon, an usher and a Bible study table leader.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father and his first wife, Myrna. He is survived by his wife, Janet of El Cajon, CA. His children Susan Curo and her husband Joseph of Lakeside, CA, Cameron Saal and his wife Petra of Livermore, CA, and Shenandoah Thompson of Oklahoma. Children of his blended family include: Helen Williams and her husband Wesley of Indian Head, MD, Richard Speidel and his wife Mary of La Plata, MD, and Philip Speidel of Bryans Road, MD. Other survivors include, his brother Randy Saal and his wife Bobi of Ft. Mill, SC and his sister Kathy Rink and her husband Dean of Goshen, IN. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and many nephews and nieces and grandnieces.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Shadow Mountain Community Church, in El Cajon, CA, January 6, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made in his memory to: Kindred Hospice, 9444 Balboa Ave., Suite 290, San Diego, CA 92123 or Scripps Hospital La Jolla, 9888 Genesee Ave., La Jolla, CA 92037 for liver disease research.
