Steve was born in San Diego at Mercy Hospital and was one of seven siblings born to Walter and Helen Sample. He spent his entire childhood in Harbison Canyon until marrying Judi (Rydinski) on Dec. 2, 1967 at Saint Louis de Marillac Catholic church in Crest.
He was a paving contractor by trade and owned and operated Canyon Grading for some 40 years. He was an avid bass fisherman and spent a great del of time at Picacho State Park on the Colorado River with his entire family. HIs hobbies included collecting antique fishing lures and gas pumps of which he had many. He was the happiest when he was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren and there couldn't have been a more dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.
He died peacefully in his sleep at home in Crest which would have been his wish. He was a "favorite Uncle" to numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Steve will be sorely missed by his family and many dear friends. He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Judi; son, Walter "Wes" Sample of Mexico; daughter, Stephanie (Jason) Jacques of Alpine; grandson, Jake Sample of La Mesa grand daughter, Shaney Sample of La Mesa granddaughter, Mia Jacques of Alpine; and grandson, Hudson Jacques, also of Alpine. He is also survived by sister, Lori Van Dyke; brothers, Richard (Shelia) Sample of Lakeside, and Matt (Susie) Sample, Santee; and sister-in-law, Peggy Sample of Cupertino, CA.
