She was predeceased in death by her parents, her stepmother Lois Manning Brown, and stepsister Johnie Lois Echols. Charlene is survived by her two children, Nona Gaylene Freeman and Steven Clay Yarbrough (Keri), both of whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Hayli Analise and Hudson Clay Yarbrough who were her greatest joy. In addition, Charlene is survived by her brother James Walter Brown (Lura) of El Dorado, and her favorite nephews James Scott Brown of El Dorado and Walter Allen Brown of Lewisville, Texas. She is also survived by extended family and friends.
Charlene was first and foremost a homemaker and mother, both of which she did well. She was probably best known for her skills as a cook, and a fantastic one at that. For a couple of years, she baked Christmas tea rings that she sold to people all over Union County. She also worked in the cafeteria at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, AR, for a period of time. When her brother and sister-in-law visited the cafeteria one afternoon, the director told them if she just had a few more employees like Charlene that the cafeteria would be one smooth operation. She was indeed, a skilled cook and good employee.
Charlene's gifts were not only evident in the kitchen, but in sewing also. She was an exceptional seamstress who often laughed at her sister-in-law who could barely thread a needle. Her laughter was one of her well-known traits. Charlene could lift the gloom of any room with her laughter that was contagious. She was also an accomplished Bingo player in her later years and gave her winnings to her cherished grandchildren. Charlene will definitely be missed by those who loved her.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Young's Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be at 10 am with the service following at 11 am. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to the charitable organization of the donor's choice, or to First Baptist Church of Smackover, Arkansas, of which Charlene was a member.
