Ed, as his friends and family referred to him, was preceded in death by his parents Frank E Humphreys, Jr. and Sara Vickers Humphreys.
Ed is survived by his loving wife Lacy Newman Humphreys, and three children: Tyler Rogers (Stacie) of Smackover, AR, Tanner Rogers (Cassie) of North Little Rock, AR, Mary-Christa McLelland (Taylor) of El Dorado, AR and four grandchildren. Ed is also survived by a very special family friend, Ms. Jean Tatum, whom cared for Ed like he was her own. He also had his loyal companions, his dogs, who were like his children: Kelly, Maverick, Earlene, BB King, and Rascal. Also surviving Ed were his host of many cats, cattle, horses, ducks, chickens, rabbits, geese, and deer at his farm in Sandyland.
Ed was an Eagle Scout and a 1972 graduate of Smackover High School. Upon graduation from SHS, Ed spent his college years at the University of Arkansas before completing his education at Southern Arkansas University. Ed also attended Oil-Belt VoTech in El Dorado to learn the trade of machinist and follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather at Vickers Machine Works in Smackover, AR. Ed was very decorated with many awards, medals, trophies, and other accolades in his time of studying at the Oil Belt VoTech.
Ed went to work for his father and uncle, Richard Vickers, in the machine shop before moving to Vail, CO to take a job at Vail Associates in the same field. This included the maintenance and upkeep of Ski Lifts and machinery on the local ski resorts. This is where he met his lifelong friend, Kerry McClellan, who gave him the nickname, Hammer. After 20 years of service to Vail Associates, Ed retired and returned back to Smackover to work on the family farm and continue his education at Southern Arkansas University before taking ownership of Safe 3 Working Interests LLC.
Ed later married the love of his life, Lacy, in July 2016 in Pensacola, FL during what he described as “the best family vacation ever.” They then celebrated this day in October 2016 with friends and family with a ceremony at First United Methodist Church and followed by celebration with a large host of family and friends at Sandlake Farms. This union gave Ed the children he had long desired for and brought along four special grandchildren, Meg, Lillie, Ella, and Vance, who consumed his life and brought him great joy.
Ed was a well-known and devoted fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks, even so far as being semi-famous and known as the guy with the Razorback truck! He seldom missed football, basketball, and baseball games to cheer on his beloved Razorbacks. He enjoyed this time with his very good friends: Jim Atwell, Marcus Gunner, and Lee Carney.
There will be a memorial service at First United Methodist Church in Smackover, AR on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 2pm with Pastor Steve Cook officiating under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors. A celebration of Ed’s life will follow in the Fellowship Hall. ALL Family, Friends, and anyone who loved Ed are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Donations and memorials are to be made at Ed’s request to UCAPS, El Dorado, AR and First United Methodist Church, Smackover, AR.
