
He was the born in Henry Rosamond Hospital in El Dorado to Ray Marshall and Bessie Lawrence Shugart Sr. on November 9, 1930. He was raised on the Calion Road farm and helped at their family business, Palace Drive Inn. He attended El Dorado Public schools and Henderson State College in Arkadelphia. He began his career at Root Petroleum Co-American Oil Co in El Dorado then transferred to the Alvin Texas plant. After 35 ½ years of faithful service he retired from Amoco Chemical-BP. For Ray’s long-time service in the Arkansas National Guard he received an honorable discharge. He was a member of Second Baptist Church El Dorado.
Ray was a people person and loved to talk. He was quick witted, quick to help others, quick to draw a crowd and quick to make everyone laugh. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and was a longtime member of the Gene and Herring Camps in Strong. Bird watching, gardening, reading and politics were among his hobbies. He was an avid cook and always loved to fix a feast for all his children and grandchildren. He had a great love and passion all for animals, especially his dogs.
He is preceded death by his parents, his wife, Joyce Eudy Shugart, his sister, Sarah Shugart Bridges and his daughter-in-law, Sue Ellen Shugart.
He is survived by his children, Cheryl Reames (Terry), of El Dorado, Steve Shugart of Alvin, Texas and Marsha Taylor (Guy) of League City, Texas. Papaw Ray has six grandchildren, Billy Jones (Christi), John Reames all of El Dorado, Manda Bricker (Ed) of Sun City Kansas, Kristi Shugart, Staci Batson (Nate), Mark Nordenstrom (Kristen) all of Alvin Texas, and Dr. Tara Parker (Warren) Pearland, Texas. Seven great grandchildren, Meghan and Brendan Jones, Gracie and Sophie Bricker, Kendyl and Addy Nordenstrom, Ethan Capehart and two more on the way; nephew Mark Bridges (Denna) of Houston, Texas; niece, Traci Bridges of Dallas.
Visitation will be from 6 pm to 8 pm today at Young’s Funeral Home
Funeral Service will be at 2 pm Tuesday in the Chapel at Young’s Funeral Home with Troy Barrios and Kay Ruddell, officiating. Burial to follow in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home.
