
The son of Albert Cecil and Inez Peters Bowman, Ray was born and raised in Opp, AL. After graduating from high school he attended Samford University, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. He earned his Doctor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. After completing two years of general surgery training at Vanderbilt Medical Center, he served for two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at White Sands Missile Range, NM. In 1979 he completed his urology residency at the Ochsner Medical Center and moved to El Dorado, where he practiced urology for 28 years.
A member of Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church, Dr. Bowman also served terms on the boards of the South Arkansas Symphony and the El Dorado Council of Camp Fire. He was Chief of Staff at Warner Brown Hospital. 1985-86; and from 1992-96, and served on the boards of the Arkansas Department of Health. He was a president of that board in 1995. In his professional life and his personal life, Ray’s goal was always to do the right thing.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Bobby and Barron.
Among those who will miss his warm smile, his kindness, his intelligence and clever wit are his wife of 45 years, Sue Shaddix Bowman; his son, Sean Bowman of Stillwater, Ok; and his daughter, Cate Campbell, and her husband, Joseph of Austin, TX.
A memorial service for Dr. Bowman will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 7, at Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church.
