Allan was born June 9, 1943 in Wharton, Texas. He grew up working after school in his parents’ grocery store and became an Eagle Scout, taking the bus by himself to Houston to achieve merit badges. After graduating first in his class at Wharton High School, Allan went on to the University of Texas at Austin – graduating with honors in 3 years before being accepted to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Galveston was an instrumental part of his life, where he developed life long friendships and his love of pediatrics – completing his internship and serving as Chief Resident in Pediatrics, solidifying his passion for teaching.
During the Vietnam War, Allan entered the Army as a Major and was stationed in El Paso at William Beaumont Army Medical Center. While at Beaumont, he established the Pediatric Gastroenterology Clinic before entering private practice at El Paso Pediatrics in 1974. He continued to practice at EPPA for 47 years, until his retirement in 2021. During his career, he served several terms as Chief of Pediatrics at Sierra Medical Center, as well as Chief of Staff at Providence Memorial Hospital. Allan derived great joy from taking care of the children of his former patients and seeing them grow into adults – many of whom entered the field of medicine. When celebrating his retirement, he said it had been the most rewarding life developing relationships with not only his patients but their families.
A devoted sports fan who always knew the latest statistics – whether college football, NFL, tennis, golf - he relished engaging in conversation with others who shared his interest. He looked forward to every December as the start of the college football bowl season and running into the NFL playoffs – an annual tradition with friends and his daughter Catherine, betting a nickel a game. Many special memories were made skiing with his family, playing tennis, jogging with his wife, and spending time on the golf course with his daughter. He was known to collect golf balls from courses they traveled to play, and took great pride in displaying them.
Allan is survived by his loving wife Julie, daughter Catherine and husband Matthew Sealy, grandson John Allan Sealy. He was looking forward to the birth of his second grandchild in April. Allan will be remembered for his generous spirit and dedication to the care of the children of El Paso – and by his family as a doting grandfather who enjoyed working in his garden, meeting his wife for lunch, and visiting the farmers market looking for fresh tomatoes.
At Dr.Alpard’s request, there will be no service at this time. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
