October 5, 1932 - September 4, 2025
Today, we gather to celebrate the remarkable life of Carlyle Erwin Hansen—a man whose hand shaped metal, whose heart embraced all living creatures.
Born on October 5, 1932, in Saint Louis, Missouri, Carl was the beloved son of Lyle and Genevera Hansen. After proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army, he embarked on a career as a union sheet metal fabricator and business owner, mastering his craft as a welder. His work was more than a profession—it was a reflection of his dedication and precision. He served his community as Master Mason of the Blue Lodge 1137, A 32* Scottish Rite Freemason, and a member of the El Paso -El Maida Shrine for over 50+ years.
Carl’s life is a rich tapestry woven with adventure, family, and quiet joy. From the thrill of winding roads on his BMW motorcycle to the simple pleasures of dominoes, dice, and books in later years.
But Carl was never defined solely by his work and community service. He was a caretaker of creatures great and small, earning the endearing title "The Chicken Whisperer." Sitting under the old pecan tree, he would hand-feed his chickens, watching as they hopped onto his knees, completely at peace in his company. He loved many dogs throughout his lifetime, but his beloved Aris was his final companion, bringing him boundless joy.
Carl's love and laughter enriched the lives of many. Friends and family knew he lived life without unnecessary constraints—including clothes, at times—often surprising visitors who arrived unannounced. He was unapologetically himself, embracing every moment with humor and authenticity.
Above all, Carl was a devoted family man. He raised five children ( Catherine, Carolyn, Robert, Janet and Richard), and shared his heart with two women. His first love, Elsie France Hansen, passed away in 2003. He now leaves behind his second wife, Elaine Edwards, who stood beside him through the later chapters of his life.
Carl’s legacy is not just in the metal he forged or the creatures he nurtured—it lives on in the laughter, love, and memories carried by all who knew him. As we say goodbye, let’s honor him by living with the same fearless joy, devotion, and humor that Carl embodied.
Rest easy, Carl. Your story will live on in the hearts of those who loved you.
