CSM Southern, a great Cavalry Trooper and loyal friend.  May his memory be eternal.  

I’ve been trying to contact Dalton for the past few months and have just found out he has passed. 

I met Dalton while working and living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - we had lots of great times and fun during my time there.

We kept in touch over the years even when we both returned to our respective home lands- he was a great man - handsome- fun and a lovely person.  He was always my dance partner at parties and the many balls we attended - a really great friend and a fabulous dancer.

I met Dalton, when he came to the UK in the 90's to celebrate mutual friends wedding celebrations.

I remember fondly, Dalton asking me to dance, I politely declined, as I explained, I don't know how to dance. 

He said, just follow me. And so I did.
From a spectators view, it looked like I could dance!
Other guests, and friends commented, 'I thought you couldn't dance?'

After, I decided I would learn to dance, and did.
We often inspire others even with the small things.

Dear Southern Family,

I'm very sorry that this message is late.  I just discovered that Brother Dalton has passed on to greener pastures.  I have been trying to email him and contact him on LinkedIn for a long time and today, I did a search for him using Google and this came up.  Imagine my disbelief!!

Dalton was more than a friend and former colleague, he was a mentor to me, a confidant, and a older brother figure.  To put it simply, he was the brother I never had.  My deepest sympathies, although belated, goes out to the family and his friends for the loss of such an iconic figure.  He touched my life in ways that I can't even explain and made me a better man, husband, and father.

Again, my deepest condolences to your family.

I love You and I miss you so freaking much!, you was like a father to me I remember wen I was 3 years old u played with me I remember that you told me that I am your princess and you love me I will never forget that never never! I didn’t know that you passed away in September and when I told my mom she freaked out I hugged her and I started cry. 
It’s been a while I miss your voice, I am 14 now in the 8th grade it’s hard next year I am going to freshman year and after that college I decided to be a doctor that makes medicine to cancer and everything else I hope that you are proud of me, I live in Sweden but I diced to move to usa. 
You are in a safe place now thanks for those years I love you

Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your years of dedicated service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army-especially when you were in Vietnam, Korea and during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

As a young man raising a family Dalton was a very positive role model and a great father-in-law. Life lessons were overflowing when we talked and a abundants of love for his family.  

Thank you Sir,  for sharing the love a true gentleman and father. 



Dalton and I had a great relationship during our tenure as senior NCO's while serving in the military. On frequently occasions we would some how meet and talk about the good old days. My brother you will be in my thoughts and prayers until we meet again in heaven.

I remember my mother always talking about dalton jr she loved him and she said he loved her they were first cousins I met him 2x I remember but I really remember my mom talking about how important he was to her and how much she loved her first cousin

"Skull" was an outstanding Soldier; that's how we first met.  He was someone we could all call friend.  He worked with me in many positions during our military time together.  I always knew if something needed done, it would be done because Skull was on the job.  I am proud to say that we were friends for many years - he even took time out of his busy schedule to visit me here at Fort Hood - he always had time for friends and comrades.  His ability and discipline allowed him to teach and mentor Troopers at all levels in how to succeed in the military.  Skull was a gifted and very talented NCO; he was able to challenge and inspire his Troopers to be the best they could be.  It was a privilege and honor to be listed as your friend and I look forward to seeing you again, my friend, at Fiddler's Green.  My condolences to your family and pray for their peace and healing as they mourn your passing.  "BRAVE RIFLES", "VETERANS".

Dalton was a true friend and Patriot. What I remember most about “The Big Guy” was his creation of "Southern University".  Established to Train all Tankers in the Squadron, on how to Fight and Win, on the modern day battle field.  Dalton was family, one of a kind and will be truly missed.

Skull, as we called him, was a soldier's soldier. If crawling through Viet Cong tunnels to clear them out with only a .45 cal pistol needed to be done, it was Skull that was there to do it. No task that needed to be done was beneath him. He was known as a fixer and was sent to the unit that needed some strong leadership to get it back on its feet. My first association with him was when I was the Regimental XO and he was the Operations SGM. He made the Regimental Command Group agile and effective. I picked him as my Command Sergeant Major for a new Air Cavalry Squadron, a role he was born to fulfill. I could not have made a better choice. His leadership in training and ultimately sending them into Desert Storm were instrumental in their battle success without losing a single soldier. For me personally, he was a friend closer than a brother. He had my back, I could count on him no matter what I was trying to accomplish. I love Dalton Frank Southern, Jr. It breaks my heart that I cannot honor him by being present for the services to honor his life. Farewell Old Friend, save me a spot on Fiddler's Green.

One of the most touching things I witnessed as we left for Desert Shield was the sendoff given to Dalton by the retired NCO's in El Paso the day we left. We were leaving our headquarters building each having a number of things to carry to the busses that were taking us to Biggs.  I looked over and saw a collection of distinguished men in civilian clothes carrying pieces of the Skull's equipment for him. They wanted to be part of it and they wanted their friend to know they were with him.

Although we have not seen one another for many years, he was always there for me and our soldiers. He was there when we needed him most. I was proud to have the Southern's as part of the Squadron's command team. I shall miss him dearly and look forward to seeing him again at Fiddler's Green.


Dalton was a kind and caring person who treated everyone with respect.  Dalton will be missed by many.  Those who knew Dalton share in the loss of this special person.  Condolences to his family.

I was in the 4/3 ACR with Skull - he was our CSM.  As Mike Whittenberg said, a Soldier's Soldier!

Dalton has always been a great friend and will be missed.  I always enjoyed his laugh and learned so much from talking with him. At times like this there are just no words that express sorrow. Our prayers go out to his family. Dalton was a great man. May you Rest In Peace my friend. We will miss you.
