Chelito was born on October 20, 1928, in the Plaza Olvera neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Her parents Jose Timoteo and Luisa (Davila) Marquez were migrant farmers who settled in El Paso. Chelito was the oldest of 9 children. As a young adult, she worked various jobs including at El Paso Laundry, ASARCO, and the Hilton Hotel (now Plaza.) It was at the Hilton that she met the love of her life, Napoleon Gurany. They were married for 50 years and had 5 children.
Chelito was the heart and soul of her family and those she knew and loved. She spoiled her family every weekend with wonderful Sunday meals. Her home was a haven. You could always find the phone ringing, her birds singing, music playing or someone visiting. Chelito was always ready with a warm smile, some words of wisdom, and of course, a plate of food. During Christmas, she kept the Mexican tradition of posadas alive and would also spend the season making delicious tamales. She talked and laughed with her brothers and sisters every day.
She was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church where for decades she volunteered at the kitchen and the annual kermes. Her food, especially her gorditas, were famously sought by parishioners and the general public alike. Even on her ninetieth birthday, Chelito and her crew were making and selling gorditas to support the church. Special thanks to her life-long friends, Mrs. Amelia Rivera and Maria Diaz. Another special thanks to her favorite "son," her nephew Robert Rodriguez. Chelito was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Napoleon, her sister, Guadalupe Cortez, and her brothers, Fermin, and Raul Marquez.
Left to honor her memory are her children and their spouses, Irene (Jose Luis), Maria (Miguel), Magdalena (David), Jose (Barbara) and Daniel (Dora). And her grandchildren, John, Jacob, Katherine, Aaron, Andy, Nicholas, Anthony, Alex, Valerie, Nathan, Sara, Jackie, Julian, Isabel, SarahBelle, and Joselyn. She was blessed by God with 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Maria De Jesus Llamas, Maria Luisa Rodriguez, and Alicia Aguilera, her brothers, Nicolas Marquez and Lorenzo Marquez, and her many nieces and nephews, who loved her. Her steadfast and unwavering faith was a blessing to all who knew her.
