

Fletcher C. Newman, 85, died on June 16, 2015. Fletcher was born on December 21, 1929, in El Paso, where he attended El Paso public schools. After graduating from the Texas College of Mines in 1954, Fletcher worked as assistant engineer at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. He was to leave the secular life shortly thereafter for the Trappist Abbey of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Oregon where he spent the next 12 years in work and contemplation. After leaving monastic life, Fletcher furthered his studies with a Masters in Library Science at Immaculate Heart College, California; he completed his MA in English at UTEP in 1974. From 1968-1984, Fletcher served as Head of the Science Library, UTEP, and then as reference librarian, Science and Engineering, until his retirement in 1992.
Throughout his retirement of 20+ years, Fletcher continued his research in topics he was most interested in, the Catholic Church and classical spiritual scholars. Fletcher was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church and Faith Sharing Group.
Fletcher’s siblings, deceased, were Frances Thiel and Simeon H. Newman. He is survived by nieces, Mercedes and Angelina Newman of Austin. Fletcher was much loved by his family and friends for his kind, gentle nature, his inquiring and ever-active mind, and his devotion to God.
