Herbie was born to Homer and Willis Abney on April 27, 1950, in Levelland, Texas. He graduated from Coronado High School in 1969 and was drafted into the Army the next year. Herbie was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He made his way to the Tularosa Basin after his honorable discharge, where he met the love of his life, Margaret Nowell. They were married on May 11, 1973, and welcomed their first child, Shjan Dale. Their second child, Daniel Shain, completed the family in 1976. Herbie retired from the NMDOT in 2013.
First and foremost, Herbie was a storyteller. He could look you straight in the eye and weave a tale that you had no choice but to believe. Many times, you did not know if he was pulling your leg or not. His blue eyes would sparkle in delight either way. Herbie never met a stranger, making friends everywhere he went and would have given you the shirt off his back.
Herbie is survived by his beloved wife of almost 50 years, Margaret of the family home in Tularosa, son Shain and Nichole Abney of San Antonio Texas, grandsons Josh Abney (whom he loved like a son) and Valerie Garcia, and Kristofer Abney and Zira Diaz, granddaughters Danielle and Ashely Huebner, and Cerah Abney, two great grandsons, Roman Jimenez and Koah Abney. He is also survived by siblings Faye Ramsey, Mary Myers, Patsy Wean, Jr Abney, Lillie Mae Brooks, Homer Abney, and Ricky Abney, as well as many loved nieces and nephews.
Herbie was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Willis Abney, siblings Frankie Abney, Buddy Abney, Bill Abney, Corrine Shores and Doris Strotman, son Shjan Dale Abney and grandson, Shjan Nicholas Abney,
A celebration of life will happen at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.hillcrestfuneralhomeeast.com for the Abney family.
