James was a graduate of Benet Academy in Lisle, Illinois, and earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Eastern Illinois University, where he met his future wife. Together, they began their careers in education in Chicago, Illinois, where they also welcomed their first child, Megan. The family later moved to El Paso, Texas, where they welcomed two more children, Gina and Anthony.
James went on to earn a Master of Education from the University of Texas at El Paso. Over a 33-year career in education, he taught history and computer science, and served as a school administrator at both the middle and high school levels. He dedicated his professional life to education and to inspiring a strong sense of civic duty in his students.
A lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears, James rarely missed a game. He loved science fiction, classic films, and secretly sharing treats with the many pets he claimed he never wanted. He had a passion for travel, culture, and cuisine, and spent much of his retirement tending his garden. He also served as president of the El Paso Retired Teachers Association for two years and as editor of its newsletter for ten years.
James cherished his role as a father, and even more so as a grandfather. He loved his family deeply and was immensely proud of them all.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph P. Lamonica; his mother, Margery E. Lamonica (née Swift); his brother, Joseph P. Lamonica II; and his sister, Mary E. (Lamonica) Nation.
