

James P. Viola passed away on March 20, 2010, at age 76 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on January 14, 1934 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Italian immigrants, he was one of five children. He spent his youth playing baseball and, an avid music lover; he also enjoyed playing the saxophone. Later, he was called to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He traveled throughout Asia during this time and was honorably discharged to Fort Bliss. It was in El Paso that he met his beloved late wife of 52 years, Faye Viola, with whom he had a large family. In the 1970's, he rose to prominence as Senior Vice President of Farah Mfg., where he had begun his early career in the mail room. Later, he formed his own corporation, Viola Sportswear. Through a partnership with a small design group they formed Sassoon Jeans, and over the years the company grew to a multi-million dollar enterprise with products sold throughout the United States with numerous plants located in the U. S. and Mexico. He was also an innovator in the denim industry, developing various washing and dyeing techniques used in denim finishes today. Jim was beloved by his family and friends. He was hardworking, funny, generous, well-traveled, and lived life well. While always a private man, he touched many lives during his lifetime and leaves a large loving family with many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He generously supported numerous organizations over time. Special thanks to Betty and the staff and nurses at CMA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the local hospice. Friends are invited to attend a rosary on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home West. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Queen of Peach Church, 1551 Belvidere. Interment will follow at Evergreen East Cemetery.
