

John was born in Orangeville, Texas on June 21, 1922. Enlisting in the Army at a young age, John was a veteran of WW II and the Korean conflict, serving for a total of 22 years on active duty. He retired from the Army in 1964 after having achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class (E7). Accepting a commission as First Lieutenant (1LT), John continued his military service in the Army Reserves as an ROTC insturctor and in 1971, completed a successful miltary career while achieving the rank of Captain (03). John started a second career teaching history in the Texas School System, obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and finally retiring from the Texas School System. John was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars; Senior Volunteer Program; National Veterans Foundation; National Rifle Association; The 1st Cavalry Division Association; Master Mason, Grand Lodge of Texas; El Maida Shriners of El Paso; and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., USA Valley of El Paso, Orient of Texas. John is survived by daughters Patricia Kuntz of Atlanta, GA; Sharon Modine of Huron, SD; Johnette Norton of Moncks Corner, SC; Jeanette Egan of Chaparral, NM; and Kimberly Covar of Austin, TX; sixteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nancy Cranford of Virginia Beach, VA and Brenda Pruitt of Dallas, TX. You will be deeply missed and in our hearts forever.
The Pitts Family will receive relatives and friends on Wednsday, January 31, 2018 from 12:00 P.M to 12:30 P.M. at Funeraria Del Angel Martin East Chapel. Graveside will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 1:00 PM.
