José Arturo López was born in Chihuahua, Chihuahua on March 2nd, 1919 to Ramon López and María Luisa Mijarez. He was baptized Roman Catholic, in hiding, during the time of the Mexican Revolution. He is survived by his wife, Rosa María López, and his children: Guadalupe López, Josefina Sosa, Norma López, Rebecca Hutchens-López, David López, Avelardo Arturo López, José Salvador López, and Rev. Mariano Heriberto López, and by his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his children: Jesús Arturo López, Lourdes Medrano and Jorge López. José Arturo was known for a strong work ethic, having been part of the “bracero” migrant worker program and working in dairies in Chihuahua, El Paso, and California, for close to forty years. He was also known for his persistence. Obstacles were not understood to be definitive, but instead an opportunity for more creatively and persistently discovering a solution. His marriage with Rosa Maria, 39 years ago, led him to discover the value of dedicating himself to God and to family first. He came to embrace the faith he was baptized in more fully and to teach the Catholic religion to his children as he accompanied them to varied forms of service to the Church at Our Lady of Assumption Parish from their childhood and into their adulthood. Some of his last words were “gracias a Dios” and he was persistent in signing himself with the cross at the beginning and at the end of the day. The family is grateful for the support of many members of the Catholic Church. José Arturo passed from this world on July 31st, 2017. Visitation on Friday, August 4th at Our Lady of Assumption Parish at 5:30PM, followed by rosary/vigil service at 7PM (4800 Byron Street, El Paso, TX 79930). Funeral mass will take place at the same location on Saturday, August 5th at 10AM. In lieu of flowers, relatives and friends may give a love offering to Our Lady of Assumption Parish or to the Saint Charles Seminary Endowment Fund.
