Maria Eva Resendez Salcido, (Evita Correa Resendez), passed away peacefully at home on March 3, 2025, entering the loving arms of Jesus and his angels. Mami (Abuelita), was an extraordinary lady, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, family member, and friend. Evita came from humble beginnings and went on to become a mother of six, a basketball star, a singer, a woman who faced tough times with strength, pride, and grace. As a young lady, Evita led her basketball team to the Mexican National Basketball Championship in 1952 and is honored in El Salón de la Fama del Deportista Juarense in Cd. Juárez, the city’s Hall of Fame. By winning singing contests with her sweet voice that could lift spirits and melt hearts, she was offered a radio show to sing nightly on a Juarez radio station. After her superstar period, she married the love of her life Arturo. Heartbreakingly, she was widowed at the young age of 36 and alone focused on raising their six kids. Encouraging them with her love of learning and education and her unwavering support, they all went on to pursue professional careers. Her own education consisted of attending Escuela de Enseñanzas Especiales No. 21, where she majored in business and then attended El Paso Community College, where she was named on the National Dean’s List. Evita was an avid cook and because of her love of indulging her grandchildren, she was known to make special meals for each one, be it tacos for one, enchiladas for the other, and fries for still another. She had a deep love for children, and no matter where she was, they always seemed to be drawn to her. She had a special passion for learning about medicine and treatments, often sharing home remedies with others. Her love for plants and cooking was evident, as she enjoyed feeding anyone who came her way. Mami’s house was always a place of warmth and welcome, where she taught us to approach strangers with love, humility, generosity, curiosity, and plenty of hugs. Her inquisitive nature and genuine interest in people’s lives made everyone feel valued and heard. She opened her heart and home to those in need, offering shelter and care with open arms.
Evita is survived by her six children: Hector Arturo (Juanita), Pat (Gilbert), Becky (Leo), Lorenzo Armando (Claudia), Eva (Tom), and Luis (Armida). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Hector Arturo Salcido III, Ivan Salcido (Jeannette), Raul Salcido (Sarah), Mavis Govea (Josh), Michael Montes (Tabbie),
Chris Montes (Liz), Lizzie (Thaddeus), Julian (Kendra), Diego, Gabriel, Pablo, Justin,
Angel, Paula, Myriam, Camille (Jeremy), Evan, and Cindy. She was also blessed with
14 great-grandkids: Daniel, Jonny, Jordan, Isaac, Estella, Jett, Lily, Haley, Elishah, Elliot, Isaiah,
Christian, Abigail, Brooks, Bennett, Bethanie, Leo Ruben and our newest Eleanor Marie and first great great grandkid, Shane Christopher Roman III. Eva was preceded by her husband Arturo, her mother Caritina and her father Luis.
Eva’s love, kindness, and warmth will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Her legacy lives on in the courage she displayed, in how she shaped her family, in the lessons she taught, the examples she set, and the high standards she embodied. We will miss the lovingly prepared meals, especially her enchiladas and sauces, her cocooning embraces, her sweet kisses, and the encouragement she offered. Mami adored her family and friends and was loved just as much in return. We are so proud of her unique charisma, the impact she made, and how she touched so many people’s lives.
At 94, she left a legacy larger than any trophy—a life of heart, determination, and overcoming obstacles with spirit and hope.
