Marina Moreno Malooly passed away on March 5, 2025, at the age of 85. She was a resident of El Paso, Texas, and dedicated her life to caring for her husband and children. Marina was born in the Mesilla Valley, NM area and moved to El Paso in her younger years.
Marina was an active member of St. Matthew's, Queen of Peace, and St. Luke's Catholic Churches throughout her life. She volunteered with the Ladies Auxiliary, Ladies Guild, Alter Society, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and taught Religious Formation, among many other roles, demonstrating her love for the Catholic Church and beautiful faith.
Marina was a talented artist who enjoyed creating religious paintings, including images of the Divine Mercy, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, several of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and numerous landscape paintings. In addition to her artistic talents, she loved to play the piano, go golfing, garden, fish, bowling and was known for her amazing cooking. Marina brought her family together through her faith and by serving delicious meals.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John Malooly, Sr., and her son Andrew, who passed away on the same day, 22 years earlier. She is also preceded in death by her mother, Josefina Moreno Nunez; her father, Manuel Moreno; her sisters, Suki Moreno, Mary Defentes, and Nelly Rubio; and her brother, Gilbert Moreno, Sr.
Marina is survived by her daughter Laurie Sterling (and her husband Rod), their children Dr. Ryan Sterling and Sean (and his wife Ciara), along with her great-grandson, Easton. She is also survived by her son, John II, and his daughter, Keely Adriana, as well as her youngest daughter, Kathleen Malooly, and her children Kody, Hannah, and Sophia. Marina’s sisters, Velia Marquez (and husband Ray) and Rome Richardson also survive her along with many nieces and nephews.
The rosary and visitation will take place on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at Martin Funeral West (visitation 4 p.m./rosary at 6 p.m., located at 128 N. Resler, El Paso, TX. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, located at 1551 Belvidere, El Paso, Texas, at 10 o'clock a.m. with Father Allen officiating. Immediately following the service, there will be a burial at Memory Gardens of the Valley, located at 4900 McNutt, Santa Teresa, NM.
Pallbearers will include Ryan, Sean, and Rod Sterling, Kody Clairmont, Orlando Mena, and Max Cruz. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Association.
The family will gather privately for a reception (invitation only).
