Heaven gained an Officer and a Gentleman last Friday, January 13, 2017. Richard Axel Johnson (LTC-RET) left his beloved wife of 61 years, Lydia Jeanne, and his children Axel Peter, Marie-Annette, and Norbert Richard (Spouse Megan Beth), and grandchildren Dane Richard, Jens Christian, and Nils Axel.
Born in Moline, Illinois on December 10, 1929 to Swedish immigrants John Axel and Jenny Johnson, Richard spent his early years growing up in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. Known for his amazing Swedish pancakes, he was best known for his warm smile and kind, humble, sweet soul. He was a connoisseur of all things ice-cream, which he has passed down to his extended family.
A career US Army Officer, he served in both Vietnam and Korea. While traveling in France he met his wife and love, Lydia. Although his life was spent in the US Army serving his Country, his true passions were the sciences, reading and travel. And he rediscovered his passion for distance-running in his middle age and became an accomplished and well-known competitor in the local road racing scene. This passion became an inspiration to his children who followed in his “footsteps”. His love for his dogs was supreme.
Mass will be held for family and friends at WBAMC chapel on Thursday, January 26 at noon. Entombment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full-military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Humane Society of El Paso.
Arrangements under the direction of Martin Funeral Home, El Paso, TX.
