Rosa Irma Mendez

Mama was a strong woman, gentle but direct. She was an amazing woman. She welcomed and “adopted” any one into both her home and family with open arms. She was well known as “MAMA” to all and was not afraid to chase you with the spatula. Mama was a very sensitive and compassionate person; she loved her family and friends very deeply. She spent her life caring for others; she never put herself before others. No matter the reason or circumstance she would go out of her way for you.

She raised five children and eight grandchildren. Many people don’t think of this as a job, but we can tell you it is hard work.

You would never go hungry if you were at her house. This was simply the person she was. Her door was always open and there was always food in the kitchen. She was well known for her cooking, refried beans and frijoles charros were her specialty. It seemed as though she was cooking for the entire neighborhood daily. There was never an unclean plate.

She knew how to laugh at anything. She was always looking for the silver lining in a grey storm cloud. She would always say “ahorita sale el arco iris”. That was Mama; always there to lend a hand or a smile. Whichever one you needed, she was more than happy to give it to you – unconditionally.

The most important lessons were not verbal; they were in actions and it was not always with the “chancla”. She taught her children and grandchildren strong values and the importance of family, faith, hard work, kindness, tolerance, generosity, forgiveness and love.

Love and marriage is not always an easy commitment. We will treasure all the wonderful loving memories and exchanges that our parents shared.

She fought a good fight. Even though she was in tremendous pain she always remained strong and never wanted attention focused on her disease. She wanted everyone to continue on with their lives and was more concerned with how we were doing and if we were happy.

She will forever be remembered for the things that she loved to do and the love she spread through others through her kind gestures. While she may not be with us physically today, her gentle spirit will remain in our hearts forever.

We hope and pray that all that were touched by her can continue the passion and love of family that she shared.

We don’t know if she knows but if she does, we know that she would be humbled at this outpouring of love and support.

We love her so much and wish that we had more time together. We will cherish all the great memories.

We miss you Mama and we will be fine. In God we trust.

El 16 de Enero de 2016, en Houston, TX, a la edad de 65 anos, murió Rosa Irma Mendez, esposa de Miguel Mendez, madre de Sylvia Soltero, Armando Mendez, Jose Luis Mendez, Jesus Mendez, y Miguel Mendez Jr., y abuela de David Soltero, Iris Amanda Mendez, Gabriela Mendez, Jennifer Juliana Soltero, Jose Luis Mendez, Victoria Michelle Soltero, Ivan Mendez, Holliegh Mendez, Jesus Mendez Jr., Armando Mendez Jr., Jessica Nicole Mendez, and Miguel Rafael Mendez, y Ethan Mendez, bisabuela de Lenae Elizabeth Herrera, Kristen Sophia Soltero y Noah Tien Phuoc Nguyen. Precevida por su madre Velia Portillo y hermano Jose Luis Coronado. Descansa en Paz Mama.
