Ruben was a talented chef who took great pride in his craft. Throughout his career, he worked at several of El Paso’s notable establishments, including the El Paso Club, the El Paso Airport Hilton, and the Santa Teresa Country Club. He loved the art of cooking—especially the creativity, presentation, and the joy of serving others. His family will always remember the unmistakable smile he’d get when he tasted something he enjoyed—a small moment that perfectly captured his appreciation for good food.
Ruben is survived by his children: Angel R. Castro, Hector J. Castro, Luz Celia Griffin, Eduardo Castro, R. Patricia Mireles, Laura Mejia, Nora Elisa Duran, Lorena Bluemer, and Ruben L. Castro. He was blessed with a large and growing family: 29 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his companion of 14 years, Rosalie East, whose friendship and loyalty brought comfort and companionship to his later years.
Ruben was preceded in death by his wife, Celia Gonzalez Castro; his sister, Rebecca Pineda; and his parents.
Those who knew him will remember his strong will—sometimes stubborn, always determined—and the lasting influence it had on his family. His warm smile, his pride in his work, and his unmistakable enjoyment of a good meal will be cherished memories for years to come.
Ruben’s legacy lives on in the strength of his children, the warmth of his family, and the countless memories shared around tables he helped fill.
