Shirley Rasberry Carter, 78, peacefully passed away in her home, on September 8, 2013. Lifetime resident of El Paso, she was born November 18, 1934 to Jack and Celeste Rasberry. Shirley attended El Paso High School, Hollins College, UT-Austin and Texas Western University. She married Pete Carter in 1955, and celebrated 51 years of marriage at the time of his passing in 2006.
Gracious, generous and always optimistic, she blessed her family and those she touched with her sweet, cheerful voice, her unconditional love and unfailing support. She was a faithful member of the Church of St. Clement and participated in the choir for many years.
She enjoyed volunteering, serving in the Junior League, most recently singing and dancing with the Good Time Singers, spreading musical joy to nursing homes throughout the city, as well as participating in several Junior League Follies productions. She served at Hotel Dieu Hospital, and as a docent at the El Paso Art Museum, and delivered Meals-on-Wheels with her husband Pete, after he retired.
She loved travelling the country with her husband and spending time visiting family and friends and seeing new places down roads less travelled. She reserved the first Wednesday each month when her long-time friends, known as the “Out to Lunch Bunch,” met at Avila’s, all done for many years with nary a call or reminder; they were friends who loved each others’ company and conversation.
Shirley will forever be sorely missed by her children, John, Cate and husband Bob, Lee, Nina and husband Jim; grandchildren Robin, Clay, Catherine, Pete, Scott, Grace and Paul; her sweet and loving sister-in-law, Mary Jane Heyward, and best friend, confidant and sister, Patti Steinmann.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Clements Church, 810 N. Cambell Street.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: The Church of St. Clement, The Rescue Mission of El; Paso, The Humane Society, or the charity of your choice.
