
He was a native of Upton, KY and was a member of Gilead Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He served in the United States Air Force during WWII. He was shot down in the Mediterranean and later was involved in D-Day. He retired from Civil Service at Fort Knox. He was also a farmer, and an avid woodworker.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Mae Cardin Avery; son, Gregory Allen Avery; brother, Raymond Avery; two sisters, Willia Heady and Rudelle Duvall; and parents, L.T. Avery and Mary Edith Miller Avery.
He is survived by his son, Craig (Dori) Avery of Nicholasville; daughter, Jane (Warren) Clifford of Elizabethtown; five grandchildren, Shelby (Mandy) Avery, Jill Avery Young, Luke (Bailey) Avery, Leslie Clifford (Dean) Smith, and Jason Clifford; and seven great grandchildren with another due in March. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Atria in Elizabethtown for their love and care for dad over the past 11 years.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home with Dr. Steve Hadden officiating. Burial will follow in Sonora Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Wednesday prior to the 11 a.m. service at the funeral home.
