Clarice L. James of Elk Lake, Michigan, died peacefully at her home on Friday, August 29.
Clarice was born April 16, 1927 in Wray, Colorado, the youngest of ten siblings. She moved to Denver in high school where she met the love of her life, Robert E. James and they began dating. She would often tell stories about their dates. Bob, as an usher at the Paramount Theatre in Denver, would sneak her into the 10 cent movies for free which she thought was something special.
A proud mother of five sons, she is survived by her husband Bob, her sons Bob Jr., Mike, Greg, Doug and Bruce, her daughters in law Joy, Leslie, Cindy and Kelly, as well as her grandchildren Carrie Ann, Michael, Erin, David, Katie, Rachel, Laura and Meredith, and her great granddaughter Leila.
She attended the University of Denver and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from University of Michigan and a Master’s Degree in Art History from the University of Michigan. Clarice enjoyed teaching art in the school system for many years. She was an active member of the PEO Sisterhood, hosting and participating in events well into her 80’s. Clarice was a long time member and past President of the Genesee County Medical Auxiliary.
Clarice was a life-long active member of Central United Methodist Church in Flint, Michigan, Grand Blanc United Methodist Church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, Kewadin United Methodist Church in Kewadin, Michigan and the Bonita Springs United Methodist Church in Bonita Springs, Florida.
Clarice and Bob moved to Flint, Michigan in 1955 and lived there for over 50 years. Fond memories of their times at Warwick Hills Country Club and strong bonds with friends and family will always be cherished. In recent years they divided their time between Elk Lake and Bonita Springs, Florida, where Clarice could often be found painting, fishing, attending church and participating in PEO activities.
Clarice loved the arts and we will all enjoy our memories of her through her many paintings and ceramics.
Clarice and Bob celebrated their 67th anniversary this past June, and their love was enduring.
A determined, energetic, beautiful woman who always seemed younger than her years, Clarice’s love and unwavering support will be missed by all.
Her funeral service will be held Friday, September 5th at 11:00 a.m. at Kewadin United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 4th from 6-9 p.m., at Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids.
Donations in her honor may be made to the Kewadin United Methodist Church, 7234 Cairn Highway, Kewadin, MI 48648.
