

Leonard L. Klein 89, of Elk Rapids died peacefully on Monday September 20, 2010 at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. Leonard was born in Metamora OH, on February 26, 1921 the son of Louis
and Amanda (Busch) Klein. He married Ruth B. Bieser on May 5, 1945 in Chicago IL. After High School,
Leonard attended Yale University during WWII and received a commission as an Engineering offi cer, upon
graduation in 1943, He served as Group Engineer offi cer for the US Army Air Corps until 1946. Leonard
received a Civil Engineering Degree from MSU in 1949. He was a Registered Professional Engineer. His work
included Armco Steel for seven years before joining Superior product Co. and retiring in 1987. He was a
member of Calvary Lutheran Church, a Life member of American Society of Civil Engineers, and Honored
Member of Rotary, Life member of Elk Rapids Masonic Lodge #275, he served on Elk Rapids Township
Planning Commission, Village of Elk Rapids Harbor Commission, Elk Rapids Zoning Board of Review,
Antrim County Planning Commission, Chairman of the Antrim County Board of Public Works, Chairman
of Directors of the MSU School of Engineering, and much more. Leonard is survived by his wife of 65
years, Ruth Klein of Elk Rapids, two daughters; Betty (Fred) Becchetti of Ann Arbor and Ellen (Lee) Welch
of Traverse City, four Grandchildren; Jonathan and Michael Welch, and Marc and Thomas Becchetti, and his
brother Charles Klein of Elk Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Kathryn Swan. A
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday September 25, 2010 at 11am at Calvary Lutheran Church in Elk
Rapids with visitation from 10am until time of service. Pastor David Mellor will offi ciate. Burial will take
place in Maple Grove cemetery Elk Rapids. Memorials may be given in Leonard’s name to; Calvary Lutheran
Church, Elk Rapids EMS or the charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral
