Margaret “Peggy” Hulburt, age 56, of Elk Rapids passed away peacefully Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Munson Hospice House after an 18 month courageous battle with brain cancer. She was born February 6, 1958 in Manistee to John and Mildred (Nelson) Miller.
Peggy graduated from Onekama High School in 1976 and went on to attend Olivet College earning a Bachelor’s Degree in business. Peggy found her calling as a bartender and waitress, and she made that her career. She thoroughly enjoyed dealing with the public and serving her customers, always ready with a snappy comeback and one-liner. While working as a bartender in Traverse City she met her future husband; she married Dale R. Hulburt on May 5, 1990 in Elk Rapids.
Peggy was a proud farmer’s daughter, growing up in the Arcadia area. Arcadia was a small, tight knit community which Peggy remembered with great fondness.
Peggy was an avid reader, enjoying mostly mystery and sci-fi. She also loved to garden, feeding and watching birds, and was an amateur photographer. Peggy was strong willed, determined, and liked interacting with people. She was very independent, bordering on stubborn, and you always knew where you stood with Peggy. She loved to laugh and to make others laugh. Her family remembers Peggy always having a dish of candy available and her cookies were some of the best.
Peggy is survived by her husband of 24 years, Dale; siblings: Patricia (Steve) Tondu, Pamela (Jim) Valrance, John (Phyllis) Miller, and David (Sheryl) Miller; many nieces and nephews, and beloved pets: Boone the dog and Molly the cat.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 2pm with visitation starting at 12 noon at the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids.
Memorial contributions in Peggy’s name may be directed to an animal shelter of the donor’s choice.
