Norbert J. Rooke, 82, passed away at his home in Elk Rapids on Thursday, July 31, 2014, surrounded by his family. Norbert was born on August 26, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of James and Sophia (Schaefer) Rooke. After serving his country in the US Army, he attended the University of Detroit where he received an Engineering degree and met his bride-to-be, Joan Muenks. After 50 years of loving marriage, Joan preceded him in death in 2009. Norbert is survived by his sons, Matt (Janet) Rooke of San Jose, Steve (Cheryl) Rooke of Indianapolis, and Dave (fiancé Sheila Voorheis) Rooke of Westland; and two beloved grandchildren.
Norbert and Joan raised their family in Saginaw, Michigan. After retiring from his first career as a Sales Engineer, he and Joan retired to Elk Rapids. There he built their home, and transitioned into a second career building and remodeling homes in the area. While he enjoyed working with his hands, he also had a great love of the outdoors. He and Joan loved traveling and outdoor recreation, and were avid skiers. A favorite summer activity was spending time with family and friends at their home on Elk Lake.
Norbert was an active parishioner at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. His involvement with the church and larger community was a central part of his life, and his faith in God was a foundation for all he did.
Visitation will be 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Elk Rapids, with a funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 AM presided by Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Munson Hospice.
