

Bessie Louvena Johnson was born on February 20, 1925 in Jonestown, Howard County, Maryland. She was the fifth of eight children born to the late Augustus and Rachel Jones. She departed this life at age 91 on September 4, 2016 at 5:40 am.
Bessie was educated in the Howard County public school system. She received her spiritual foundation at Mount Pisgah AME Church and then became a faithful, devoted and life-long member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. At an early age, she received the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior and lived accordingly. She attended church faithfully and regularly until her health failed.
In 1949, she was united in marriage to the late Maurice Lee Johnson. Their marriage was blessed with five cherished children – Carolyn, Betty, Maurice, Mary and Spencer. Bessie was a dedicated, devoted and committed wife and mother. She was a spiritual, guiding force in the lives of each of her children who were the light of her life. She was very proud of their professional and personal accomplishments.
Bessie was an extraordinary and exceptional anchor for her children, grandchildren and others. She spent countless hours teaching the word of God to her children and was a source of great joy, inspiration and knowledge. Her hobbies and interests included gardening, cooking, sewing and opening her home and reaching out to touch people’s lives. Bessie worked in several capacities – factory worker, elder caregiver, housekeeper and cook. She had great love for children, religion and people in general.
In death she leaves a legacy of courage and wisdom upon which we draw in moments of trial.
She leaves to cherish her memory 5 children daughter Carolyn Johnson-Charity; daughter Betty Johnson; son Maurice Johnson; daughter Mary Johnson; son Spencer Johnson; 7 grandchildren, Kim Charity-Quinn; Adam Charity & wife Devon Charity; Eric Johnson & wife Jaime Johnson; Kelly Hayes; Justin Johnson & wife Sara Johnson; Destiny Johnson, and Sierra Johnson; 9 great grandchildren, Jasmine Charity, Anthony Charity-Quinn, Brionna Charles, Brielyn Charity-Quinn, Adam Charity Jr, Denny Charles Jr, Phoenix Jolie Martin, Ayden Johnson, and Aubrey Lyn Charity; 1 great-great grandchild Aiden Charity-Gunn; 3 surviving sisters: Elizabeth Jones, Nancy Jones, and Catherine Edmond, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is also survived by her dearest friends Peggy Meyers, Judy Miesko and Jean Campen.
Family and Friends are invited to a Celebration of life Memorial Service at Unity Baptist Church at 7204 Montgomery Rd. Elkridge, MD 21075 on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 10:00 AM. Inurnment to follow at Meadowridge Memorial Park.
