I was so blessed to have started my teaching career under the kind and genuine leadership of Mr. March at Arbutus Elementary School. After thirty yrs. of teaching Mr. March remains in my heart as my most favorite administrator!
He was a gentlemen... and a gentle man!

I will always remember him with as kind.  Mr. March's smile was wide and his spirit generous.  When I was a kid, he had given my brothers and me an open invitation to jump in his pool while visiting our grandparents next door. I picture him now, standing in his driveway, around 1977, in Bermuda shorts, laughing, waving us over. He was a great man.

I'm 9 or 10 years old (summer 1974-75).  Baseball is oxygen for me and all of us in Elkridge bleed orange and black.  Mr. March invites myself and Rodney Hillman to tag along with him (and Jim) to a Sunday afternoon Orioles game.  Blistering, hot, sunny day on 33rd Street.  We park 200-300 feet from Memorial Stadium.  We enter the bowels of the stadium and make are way through the hustle and bustle.  Mr. March talks to a few folks, shakes some hands, etc...While waiting somewhat patiently for him, I over hear a conversation between he and some PR folks about the need for two kids to sweep the bases midway through the game.  Mr. March immediately turns to Rodney and myself asking us if we'd like to do it.  It was one of those, "who, me" ? moments.  Surreal, no doubt. 

Jim selflessly declined and Rodney and I were in.  Now I'm in my 3rd base, box seat, and can barely sit still.  Top of the 5th ends and Rodney and I are corralled down by Pat Santarone's tomato patch/maintenance entrance.  I'm handed an orange, junior Orioles tee shirt (which I quickly throw on) and an orange broom.  I've been instructed to run down the third base line and sweep off home plate at Memorial Stadium !  I was so nervous that my eyes never left the foul line.  At home plate I did take a brief second to soak up that beautiful field and how far away the center field wall was.  I scurried back to my seat and couldn't wait to get home to tell my family all about it.  Not sure whether we won or lost and quite frankly....(well ya know)

Mr. March thoughtfully created a memory for a kid that has lasted a lifetime.  One I'll never forget.  He was kind, considerate, and gave of his time to make Elkridge a better place.  

As for that orange broom, its proudly displayed on my garage wall.......

Rest in peace Mr. March.  My prayers go out to Mrs. March, Leslie, Jim, Theresa and all of your family.
