James Patrick Nestor, age 85, of Laurel, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 7, 2025. Born on August 2, 1939, in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of the late William O. and Mae Nestor (née Philbin).
Beloved husband of 46 years to the late Shirley F. Nestor. Loving father of Debbie Schopp (David), Darleen Cooke (Greg), Jim Nestor Jr. (Linda), and Donna Moran (Chris). Proud grandfather of Dara Schopp Helitzer (Jeff), Brandon Cooke (Justine), Jasmine Baka (Jacob), Cory, Connor, and Carly Moran, Luke, Cole, and Brynn Nestor. He was predeceased by his grandson, Dylan Schopp. Adored great-grandfather of Iris and Levi Cooke, Scarlett Baka, and Andie Faye Helitzer.
He is also survived by his loving companion, Lillian Lehnert, and his dear sisters, Kathy Neal (John) and Maryjane Leslie (Stan).
James was a proud U.S. Navy veteran and served as a police officer with the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department for 20 years followed by a long career with the University of Maryland at Baltimore Police Department, retiring as Chief in 2002. A man of many passions, he had a special love for classic cars including his 1967 Ford Mustang and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He cherished his Irish heritage and cheered for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team.
He enjoyed working in his yard, taking walks and bike rides. He enjoyed spending time on the Eastern Shore/Kent Island visiting with friends. He loved to travel—especially to Ocean City, Florida, Hawaii, Ireland, Mackinaw Island, and on cruises including the Rhine River.
Above all, James was a devoted family man who cherished time with his loved ones. He created lasting family memories with his children through boating adventures and family outings to Sugarloaf Mountain and Great Falls, Virginia. As a grandfather, he was a proud and constant presence—cheering at games, attending school events, and always showing his support. With a warm heart and playful spirit, he had a way of teasing that made everyone feel loved.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
