Katherine Gable Lauritzen of Sykesville, MD, daughter of Charles Vernon and Catherine Gable, passed away on March 3, 2023 at the age of 73, after a nearly 8 year battle with kidney cancer. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and traveler.
She attended the University of Maryland, College Park to become a teacher, graduating in 1971. She joined the Anne Arundel County Public Schools in 1971, eventually teaching 3rd-5th grade at three different schools. In 1986, she became a reading resource teacher, a role she continued in when she retired for the first time in 2003. She taught part-time at Goucher College and Johns Hopkins University. In 2007, she joined the Maryland State Department of Education as a program specialist before becoming coordinator for all of reading and English. She finally retired for good in 2015.
Kathy was an avid traveler with her first trip to Europe in 1973. She loved traveling and cherished all of the memories she made with friends and family, including multiple trips with both of her sons overseas. She reached 27 countries, always with loved ones.
Kathy had a large, open heart that was always willing to take more people into her life. At times, trying to schedule a lunch with her could prove impossible because she always had someone she wanted to see. Her sense of humor was a delight to all who knew her.
As an educator, she taught people to read. As a mother and grandmother, she taught us how to love, nurture, and support our families. She truly had unconditional love for her family. She was devoted and pushed herself forward everyday for one more chance to be with them.
She leaves behind her two sons, Kjeld and Keir (Catherine), five grandchildren, Thomas, Zoe, Matthew, Emmie, and Andrew, and her two brothers, Charles and Edwin (Donna). In addition, she leaves behind cousins, nieces and nephews, an aunt and uncle, and literally hundreds of friends and extended family. She will be missed by everyone whose life she touched.
Receiving of family and friends for Katherine will be held Sunday, March 12, 2023 from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park, 7250 Washington Blvd, Elkridge, MD 21075, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 PM.
