Louis Andrew Hood, known to most as Andy or Uncle Andy, was born on August 3, 1932 to Anna Marie Hinks and Louis Anderson Hood of Hanover, Maryland. He left us on May 21, 2025 at the age of 92 due to complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Andy graduated from Glen Burnie High School, class of 1951. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps on September 10, 1951. During the Korean War he served a tour of duty in Japan following his training as an automotive mechanic at Camp Lejeune. He received a Korean Service Medal as well as United Nations and National Defense Service Medals. He continued his service as a Marine Corps reservist until September 9, 1959.
In 1966, Andy married Rosalie Knott. They built a house on land that had been part of his grandparents’ farm. In 1967, they had a son, Doug who survives Andy with his husband, Scott Schafer. Andy lived in that home in Hanover his entire adult life.
Though Rose and Andy divorced, they remained lifelong friends. Andy, known as Pop to Jen Mock and Aimee Mason and now their daughters, Sophia and Lilly, was a well-loved member of our larger family.
Andy was an avid gardener and loved getting out as soon as the weather permitted to start his vegetable garden. He was also a tinkerer and built many fun and unique birdhouses over the years. He loved nothing more than sitting in his garage and watching the birds on his many feeders and bird bath. Donations in Andy’s memory can be made to The National Audubon Society.
There will be a small, intimate graveside service Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at Meadowridge Memorial Park followed by a gathering in remembrance of all the good times shared with him.
