Maryanne Gallagher Gallagher Foucault

She is survived by her children, Teresa F. Matchette (Robert), Mary Janelle Foucault (Thor Franklin), Michele Rene Foucault, Francis "Sam" Foucault (Shannon Marsh), and Joseph Vincent Foucault. She is also survived by her sisters Kathleen Ray, Patricia Brenn, brother William Gallagher and brother-in-law Jay Morris. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years Francis Foucault and sister Loretta Morris. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren James and Anne Matchette (Terry), Joseph Foucault (Jan), Sam and Daisy Foucault (Sam), and Calvin, Annabel, and Lily Foucault (Joe).

Maryanne was born December 25, 1930, in Waukegan Ill., the daughter of Mary and Vincent Gallagher. She attended the University of New Mexico, where she was in the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She later received her Bachelor's and Master’s Degree in early childhood education from Eastern Washington University.

She met and married Francis Foucault in 1951 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The family lived in New Mexico, New York, California, Japan, and Guam as part of Francis’ career in the U.S. Air Force. Maryanne often taught school at these assignments. After his retirement, they settled in West Seattle. Maryanne had a 20 year career with the State of Washington Department of Employment Security. After retiring from the state, she started a second career as a reservist with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, assisting victims of numerous disasters including the 9/11 World Trade Center attack and Hurricane Katrina.

Maryanne was fiercely independent, a lifelong learner, and a strong role model for many who met her. She loved to travel and learn about other cultures. She had a special place in her heart for the land and people of Mexico.

A memorial service for Maryanne will be held Saturday, October 3, 2015, from 1-3 pm at the Alki Community Center, 5817 SW Stevens Street, Seattle.
