Byron was born July 12, 1935, in Guilford College, NC to Mabel Schoolfield Hodgin and David Eugene Hodgin, Sr. He was predeceased by his wife Betty Wheatbrook Hodgin on December 25, 2014. He was also predeceased by his oldest sister Marie Hodgin Collins and two brothers David Eugene Hodgin, Jr. and Horace Calvin Hodgin. He is survived by a younger sister Barbara Hodgin Burton, of Reidsville NC and a brother Charles Stephen Hodgin of Greensboro NC. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews in North Carolina and by very special and loyal friends, Kevin and Krista Schuldt.
Byron and his siblings grew up on a dairy farm and he valued education over farm work, did well in high school, and decided to continue to college. Byron graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering on May 26, 1957. His first job out of college was in Illinois helping spread the use of mechanical dairy milking machines. He brought his talents to serve the agriculture industry throughout the USA and Canada and grew to become a noted expert in plant nutrition and crop protection chemistry. After a prolific career in the industry, Byron started his own business, Pesticide Consultants, Inc. and was a citrus farmer in Manatee County.
Byron’s Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 am Saturday at Groover Funeral Home, 1400 36th Ave. E. Ellenton, with internment to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations for Byron may be made to the charity of your choice.
