

Scott Heyward Jeffers, a dedicated military officer, educator, and beloved family man, went to heaven to be with the LORD on May 23, 2025, at the age of 68. He was born on October 23, 1956, to Heyward G. Jeffers and Avril Margaret Couper Jeffers and grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Scott graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1978, embarking on a distinguished 20-year career in the U.S. Army. He later earned a Master of Science in Management from Troy State College in 1990, reflecting his commitment to both leadership and lifelong learning. He retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in January 1997, having served his country with honor and distinction.
Following his military service, Scott transitioned to education, dedicating the next 30 years to teaching. Beginning with ROTC at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Scott later moved to Manatee County, Florida, teaching first at Lincoln Memorial Middle School and then R. Dan Nolan Middle School for a total of 25 years. His passion for helping students achieve their goals, being an advocate for them, and bringing humor into any situation has left a lasting impact. Scott was an ardent reader as well as an avid sports fan. In particular, Scott was passionate about his LSU Tigers, the Tampa Bay BUCS, the Boston Celtics, and Larry Bird.
Scott was a devoted husband, father, and brother, whose love and commitment to his family were evident in all aspects of his life. Scott is survived by his loving wife, Delena; his son, Daniel Jeffers (Tamina); his two adopted sons, Mason Taylor and Alan Booty (Angel); his brother, Heyward Jeffers (Dianne); and his stepchildren, Hannah Martin and Benjamin Martin. Scott is predeceased by his parents, Heyward and Avril Jeffers and his sister, Wendy Booty.
A memorial service to celebrate Scott's life will be held on June 22, 2025, at Palmetto First Baptist Church, 1020 4th St. W., Palmetto, Florida 34221. Doors open at 1:30pm for a 2:00pm service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation (https://leukemiarf.org/donate) or the Manatee Education Foundation – Migrant Scholarship Fund (https://mefinfo.org/give), reflecting Scott's enduring legacy of service and compassion.
Scott's passions for God’s Word, his family, the military, and teaching defined his life. He leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and love that will continue to inspire all who knew him. Scott will always be in our hearts.
