Born to Rudolph and Sylvia (Zagar) Plevell on July 7, 1949, she was born in Iowa and moved with her family to Bradenton at a young age, finishing high school at Manatee HS in 1967. After high school, she attended Manatee Junior College to become a registered nurse in 1971 and worked in that profession for 15 years. She and her parents moved to Parrish on an 8 acre piece of land. She got married in 1972 to Elam, and they built a home next to her parents' house to raise their own family. She is survived by her husband, Elam, children: Mary, Rudy and Jeanette and grandchildren: Alyssa, Shawn, Hannah, Hailey, Gavin, Olivia and Emily.
Sylvia was a devoted mom: running school bake sales, organizing/providing petting zoos and attending nearly every athletic event, sometimes even being the scorekeeper. Whenever a gift was needed for any occasion, the perfect item could be found at Mommy Mart (her closet). If friends came over, they were treated like family and provided an endless assortment of cereal, snacks, games and activities. She loved music, puzzles, animals, coffee and any game that brought the family together, especially dominoes.
Sylvia and Elam were married nearly 50 years in an amazing, devoted, loving relationship. They were hardly ever seen apart. They loved going to Rays baseball games, traveling and going camping, especially to national parks. They took their children on many adventures and created a love of the outdoors that they have now passed along to their own families. She especially liked tent camping and recounting their stories. Their favorite spot was Rocky Mountain National Park.
She loved spoiling those she loved with her famous cereal mix and thoughtful and personalized gifts. The list of people she touched is a long one, creating lasting friends of people from school to work to her favorite restaurant staff. Her generosity extended to those she never met through donations to All Children's Hospital, The Salvation Army and more. She was the ultimate listener with a dry, hilarious sense of humor and never missed a moment to be silly and jump in on a fun moment.
Sylvia's ultimate joy was her grandchildren. She snuggled them, sang to them and showered them with anything their hearts' desired, making each one feel like the most important person in the world.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on September 18, 2021 at Christ Episcopal Church, 4030 Manatee Ave. West, Bradenton, FL 34205. If you would like to, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to All Children's Hospital in St Petersburg. https://give.hopkinsallchildrens.org/fundraiser/3397871
