

Dr. David Norman Hendrickson, born 1/1/1943 in Minneapolis, MN to Henry and Lorraine (née Berglin), died suddenly on January 7, 2023 after a long and difficult battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He is survived by his wife Sherry; daughters Shelley and Susanne; grandchildren Rohan and Ella; brothers Tom and Joel; niece Laura and nephew Brian.
David was educated at UCLA and UC Berkeley where he earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1969. Following a postdoctoral appointment at Caltech, he began his career in academia as a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Illinois in 1970. In 1989 he moved to the University of California, San Diego. Throughout his career he collaborated with leading chemists and physicists around the world and was a frequent speaker at international symposia. With over 500 published papers, he remains one of the most frequently cited authors in the field of chemistry. Under his direction more than 50 students received their Ph.Ds. He retired from UCSD in 2011 as an Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, receiving recognition for his seminal contributions to the field of transition metal inorganic chemistry and the discovery of single-molecule magnets.
David loved dogs and was particularly fond of golden retrievers. In his memory we ask that you consider supporting organizations working to provide good homes to animals that need them.
