Gita Ingeborg Nagi, 92, of Tuscaloosa, AL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 27, 2021, in Encinitas, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Kamal Nagi, Ret. Col. US Army Reserve, who died from cancer in 2020. She was loved dearly and remembered most for her unforgettable kindness and sincerity, thinly veiled through her gracious demeanor.
Born in Tallinn, Estonia, she studied in a convent in Germany, earning a nursing diploma with highest honors. Offered a position in Switzerland, she moved to
La Chaux-de-Fonds, where she met her first husband and with whom she had three children. Sometime after their divorce, she met Kamal while traveling through Egypt. For a time, she assisted him with his medical practice in Cairo.
They fell in love, married, immigrated to the US and settled in Tuscaloosa, AL. As Kamal began work as a psychiatrist, she organized and managed an active household, raising their four children and involving them in church, sports, tutoring and travel. In her pastime, she enjoyed listening to classical music, reading autobiographies and history, genealogy, gardening, writing letters and keeping in touch with family and friends, along with caring for the many pets they had over the years. She had a sharp mind, photographic memory and was a gifted writer. More privately, she loved to sing, share stories and had a witty sense of humor. She encouraged her family to travel and explore culture and art, museums and historic places, and to experience the beauty of nature. Kamal and Gita were avid travelers and as much as Kamal enjoyed taking the pictures, she enjoyed creating albums and sharing experiences with others. She enjoyed activities with her husband, lunches at the University Club, attending the symphony series on campus and eating at their favorite restaurants. After retiring, they moved to be near relatives in Arizona and settled into their home in Fountain Hills. Shortly after, her husband was diagnosed with cancer and unexpectedly passed away from complications. Her son moved in to take care of her, and the following year they moved nearby her daughter and niece in Del Mar, CA. Gita passed away in Hospice care due to natural causes. She is survived by her brother Kurt Haynberg and sister Ingrid Haynberg, her children Jean-Thierry von Buren, Roland von Büren (Christiane), Myrianne von Büren (Gèrard Kübler), Dr. Susie Nagi Harris (Robert), Dr. Maisa Nagi Morris (div.), Mr. Omar Walter Nagi, Dr. Peter Nagi (Cathy), twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on December 18th, at All Faiths Cemetery in Tuscon, AZ.
