A man who loves his wife and his family. Always making sure that they would be well taken care long after his time on earth.. So many things we have learned  and continue to learn from his presence. For I know, whether it’s a good day or not so good day, that his actions will keep me moving on to continue to enjoy my time here on earth. He will be forever missed, but never forgotten. Bless his soul, and he always will have a special place in my heart.

 I too grew up in Oak Park, went to St Giles, Fenwick and Loyola. After 4 years in the Navy I I moved to CT for business and eventually back to Hinsdale. IL.  I now  live in Greensboro, NC. 
I lost track of Jim long ago. A mutual friend from Fenwick, Bill Hagerty (now deceased) whom I stayed in touch with also remembered Jim  and together we agreed Jim Gunther was one of  'the really good guys' from our HS days.
Yes, from what I read here he remained a class act to the end. Please know Jim will be in my prayers. Bill Mosier 7/6/29.

My condolences, Pam, on your father’s passing.  My first boat ride was when  your dad took a crowd of us out on the river when we were still at Lourdes.    Such fun.    You and your family are in my prayers.

This photo was taken 12 years ago (2008) at my High School Graduation with James B Gunther (My Father), James E Gunther (Grandpa), Michael C Gunther (myself) and James R Gunther (Brother).

Many years has been has passed since then, has to many conversations of business and economics, but what will remain in my heart and will never be forgotten is the wisdom and discernment that grandpa (James E Gunther) had passed down to me through his 91 years of life.

Grandpa said to me: "if you do don't build your dreams, someone will hire you to build theirs" -- One entrepreneur to another

I have remembered the kindness and generosity of Jim and Patricia on the occasion of their daughter Karen's marriage to Wayne Connelley. I traveled to Bettendorf, Iowa for the event which was in all ways memorable. Such kind man.

I always will remember the twinkle in his eye, when he was telling a hugely crazy simple funny joke that was usually a very drawn out story with a funny very quirky ending....  Best story teller ever!


I met Jim many times at family get togethers with Karen and my brother, Wayne.   Jim was a very personable guy.  I know he was very proud of his children and grandchildren.   He enjoyed a full life filled with Pat,  the kids, family, friends, his work, travel and leisure.

My favourite memory of Grandpa was when he (as well as Grandma) attended my youth orchestra performance when I played with the San Diego Symphony. It was the transition of the quiet third to the deafening fourth movement of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. My mom would always retell how he had nodded off to sleep and jumped in his seat with the beginning of the fourth movement! I always pictured Grandpa as a very neat and proper man, and to picture him jumping was sort of funny! He and Grandma would attend a lot of my performances and events and it only fueled my need to do well so I could impress them. 

Dad and I share the same profession.  The Steel business.  When in college he asked me what I wanted to do after I graduate.  I said maybe get involved in the Steel industry.  When done lets go to Chicago and he would introduce me to some of the companies that he knew.  Visited many and I found a fit.  That was 1978 and I am still in business.  We even worked together for a number of years. And like my nephew Rob he also taught me how to play golf.  And when we did work together we would take some Friday afternoon off and hit the golf course.  And like my sisters we all enjoyed boating on the Mississippi on the summer weekends. To this day I still enjoy boating on the river and have expanded to the great Lake Michigan as well.  So yes my father has greatly influenced me.    

When I was a kid, grandpa would always ask me what the next up-and-coming thing was. This way he could get some insider intel about what to invest in. It seemed like he took great care and pride in his investments, and he was always excited to show me what he had invested in.

As a family, we certainly had a lot of different sporting activities, between, golf, tennis, boating, skiing, ice skating we did it all!  Our favorite was spring skiing out west.   What fun we had!   Dad made sure when we were young that we attended ski school.  I remember in Colorado, Buttermilk Ski Resort I had taken a serious fall and ended up in the emergency room and how he comforted me as I was laid up.   It seems to me I was always getting hurt.   The time on the boat up on our way Stillwater when I broke my elbow and ended up at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.    I think Dad thought I was an accident waiting to happen.   I was always ready to try any sport.  I played golf with my Dad on many occasions,  played on the men's tennis team league when he needed a substitute and I played on the boy's ice hockey team when I was young.   So many memories but all good ones!   Love you Dad. 

My earliest memory of my father alone with me was when I was just getting ready to sleep in a bedroom I shared with Karen at our home on Grant Street.  Dad had just said "Good night" to my brothers in another bedroom and then he stopped at my bedside to tell me that he loved me.  I must have been about 5-years old at the time. 

Another memory of Dad was when we were vacationing in Italy and had stopped at Venice for a few days.  One evening,  Dad really wanted a picture of him and the rest of us in front of  Harry's Bar, which was a famous well known bar, which I took (before the digital age).  We all had a drink and shared some dessert together inside the bar.   I never did know what was special about Harry's Bar!

Dad has always been there to offer all of his family love and support throughout the years.  I have learned so much from his pragmatism and realistic perspectives.  I have admired his friendliness to all and willing to jump in and get the job done.  I and my family are so thankful for all of his investments in the family trust. He will always be admired for his dedication for doing it right!

My grandfather taught me the game of golf,
It later turn into the game of life for me. Had it not been for all  the love support of my two wonderful grandparents, I would have never gotten into the PGA. Thanks for all the memories and taking me along at such a young age when it was an adult game.

I remember going on my "business trip" with a customer.   We went to Chicago BlackHawk hockey game.   There were the famous players,  Bobby Hull and  Keith Magnuseun.  I was about 10 years old and made a special skirt to wear for the occasion.    Kathy

My most solid memory is of Dad on the Sirius manning the captains wheel.   We had lots of fun trips on the Mississippi river up to Stillwater Minnesota or to the Kentucky Lakes.   I remember the huge lock and dam at Cairo, Illinois  and the clear water by Stillwater.   I remember Dad BBQing each night off the back of the boat!   Kathy
