Bob Abel, a man devoted to family, lifelong learning, well-being, and laughter, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2024, at the age of 91. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mildred (Sweetie) Abel, three children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on December 29, 1932, Bob led a life filled with diverse passions, and a commitment to enriching not only his own life, but also the lives of those around him. He was a great listener, gave wise counsel, and always maintained a love for laughter.
Bob was a proud alumni of Atlantic City High School, breaking into singing his alma mater anytime it was mentioned. In high school, he was editor of the year book, worked as a disc jockey at a local radio station, as a valet at the race track and helped with his parent’s hotel. He was responsible and hard working at a young age.
He completed his undergraduate degree at Temple University, and law degree at American University in Washington D.C., and then became an officer in the Navy. In his college days, he showcased his musical talent playing piano in a jazz band and demonstrated grace and strength on the gymnastics team. He had a zest for life.
Early in his work career, he balanced the responsibilities of a demanding role as a Deputy District Attorney, serving in the Navy reserves as an attorney (eventually retiring as a Captain rank), and volunteering in the National Ski Patrol. Later in life, he courageously took a leap of faith, leaving public office to establish his own successful private practice as an attorney, while imparting his legal knowledge by teaching at National University.
An avid learner and adventurer, Bob was renowned for his commitment to physical fitness. He embraced new challenges, learning to surf and ski later in life and enjoying the skies as a pilot of his own planes. He spent countless hours on the tennis court and jogging in San Diego. He would fondly point out his jogging routes near Balboa Park, Morley Field, to anyone interested. Even into his ninth decade, he dedicated hours to his gym routine in his home gym while listening to music or podcasts.
Bob lived a beautiful life. He enjoyed Mammoth Lakes, traversed the country, and made many trips to Europe with his wife Sweetie. Mastering new languages, he enjoyed speaking French and German. Bob harbored a deep passion for Porsches, owning 5 throughout his life. His favorite being a 1971 maroon 911 coupe that he purchased at the factory in Germany. Bob loved photography, his succession of Kuvasz breed dogs and watching the sunsets at home with his wife.
A devoted father and husband, Bob will be remembered as a 'class act' and 'mensch,' characterized by unwavering integrity, a sharp wit, and a generous provider of endless support. His absence leaves a void that is deeply felt by all of his family and friends.
