HENDERSON, Alfred P. “AL” 89 of Englewood, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Dayton, Wednesday, December 24, 2014 with his family at his side. He was born April 24, 1925 a son of Alfred P. Sr. and Pauline M. (nee Coate) Henderson, who precede him in death. Al grew up on Herhey St. in Datyon. He was a graduate of Fairview High School. As a young boy, Al played with his gang of friends along the banks of the Miami River, swimming, fishing , or just ‘messing around’. As he grew older, he had a number of ‘jobs’. He helped on a horse drawn milk delivery wagon, and sold the Morning Journal at the corner of Herman Ave. and Main St. In his teen years, he became a ‘filling station junkie’, working at just about every station in his part of town. WWII started, and he went into the US Army in July of 1943. He campaigned in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Centeral Europe, earning the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, among other medals. Following WWII, he met his wife Georgia who preceded him in death in September 2013. They were married in 1948 and celebrated 65 years of marriage. They were blessed with four daughters and their spouses, Cindy Henderson and Bob Crawford, Susan Henderson, Sharon and Glenn Fluegee, Sande and Dave Roberts, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Al graduated from the University of Dayton on the GI Bill. He always knew he wanted to be of service to others. He worked for many years as a used car salesman at Stengers Ford and Peffley Ford. He alos started a business of his own, Henderson and Petty Used Cars. Al attended Union and Englewood UM Churches. He and Georgia loved to travel. They took memorable trips to Canada, California, The Badlands, Yellowstone, Florida and Branson with family and friends. Al was a family man. Saturdays, were spent with his daughters, hiking at Triangle Park. We would play scouts on the lookout for Indians. As often as not, we would end up at Marion’s for pizza and malts. There will be a Gathering of Family and Friends, Monday, December 29, 2014 from 10 – 11 am at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME ENGLEWOOD CHAPEL, 675 West Wenger Road. Graveside services will follow at 11:30 am at the Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery, North Dixie Drive with Pastor George Sidwell presiding. Messages of sympathy and support to Al’s family may be made at: www.tobiasfuneralhome.com. Our dad was a very special person, and our memories of him will go on forever.
