

Colonel Edward F. Gallardo USAF (Ret), made his last flight on 09-12-2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Chicago, IL on 12-27-1931 to parents Frank and Joyce Gallardo. Col. Gallardo’s remarkable life was dedicated to service to his country, family, and friends.
Col Gallardo’s journey with the USAF began in 1952 when he enlisted, launching a 29-year distinguished career. His passion for aviation led him to volunteer for the Cadet Aviation Program in 1953. After a year of rigorous training, he earned his wings and commission in 1954, becoming a Tactical Fighter Pilot. Col. Gallardo logged an impressive 4500 flight hours, mastering the T6, T-33, F84F, F86, F100 and the F4.
His service took him throughout the globe, including the US, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Germany. Notably, on 13 June 1965 after flying a bombing mission in his F100 Super Sabre, (then) Captain Gallardo was shot down approximately 12 miles from target. He ejected from his disabled aircraft with his parachute landing at the edge of a Vietnamese village. A passing US Army helicopter heard of his predicament and picked him up after 5 mins on the ground.
Col. Gallardo served and flew with the legendary General Chuck Yeager, as his wingman, while they were assigned to the 1st Fighter Squadron. Col. Gallardo served three (3) tours in Southeast Asia, flying 186 combat missions with assignments in Da Nang and Udorn, Thailand.
Col. Gallardo's favorite assignment was as an instructor at the USAF Fighter Weapons School at Nellis AFB, NV. He had the privilege of teaching other pilots and testing out new combat weapons and equipment. He did temporary duty with various squadrons including the 555th TFS and 416th TFS while in Vietnam.
Col. Gallardo's numerous awards and decorations are a testament to his exceptional service and valor. They include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal with 1 oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with 1 silver oak leaf cluster and 4 Bronze Oak leaf clusters. Air Force Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Readiness Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Longevity Service Award with 1 silver Oak Leaf Cluster and 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster. National Defense Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, Vietnam Service medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Upon retiring, Col. Gallardo relocated to the San Diego area, settling in the city of Escondido. Here, he embraced life and kept himself busy, filled with family, church, golf, fishing, and the occasional visit to nearby Casinos with his loving family.
Colonel Edward F. Gallardo will be remembered for his distinguished military service, devotion to family and enduring faith. He leaves behind a legacy of honor, dedication and courage that will continue to inspire generations to come. Col. Gallardo’s memory will forever live in the hearts of all who knew him.
Edward is survived by his daughter Laura Ford (James) of Escondido, California; his son Michael Gallardo of Escondido, California; his son Brian Gallardo (Sophia); his daughter Linda Bowen of Escondido, California; and his son Mark Gallardo of Escondido, California; his sister Shirley Maruszczak.
Edward was preceded in death by his brother Frederick Gallardo.
Colonel Gallardo is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren
Edward will be laid to rest in Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr., San Diego, CA 92122.
