November 22, 1940 – December 29, 2010
On Wednesday, December 29, 2010, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother Barbara Cline passed away at home with her family surrounding her. Barbara left a world made sweeter by her time upon it. Born in Virginia, Minnesota on November 22, 1940, Barbara grew up in the Norwegian-American community of the Iron Range of Northern Minnesota. Her social conscience, nurtured by the Lutheran church, grew during her time at the University of Minnesota, where she obtained a degree in sociology before moving to the Southern United States to do mission work for the church. While in Shreveport, LA, she met her future husband, Ernest Cline. Two months after meeting one another, they were married in 1965. She moved frequently with her husband while he was in the Air Force, settling finally in Port Arthur, Texas, where she began raising her four young sons. Uncomfortable with the social climate of the South, Ernest and Barbara renovated an old yellow school bus and began a two-year ramble around the big spaces of the Western U.S. In 1978, Barbara and her family settled again in Vista, California, north of San Diego, where Barbara worked to build a life for her family. In the early 1990’s, Barbara and her husband moved to San Diego where they remained until the summer of 2010. Barbara moved to Eureka, California, where two of her sons live, to spend the last few months of her life. Barbara spent her life standing up to injustices large and small, and delighted in helping to raise her own children and her beloved granddaughter, Alissa, born in 2003. She remained an active member of the Lutheran church her whole life and was always willing to help others in need.
She is survived by her husband of forty-five years, Ernest Cline, and her four sons, Ernest Cline III, Curtis Cline, Lanny Cline, and Darrell Cline, along with their wives, as well as by her granddaughter Alissa Cline. She will be greatly missed and remains an inspiration to her family, friends and all who knew her.
Arrangements under the direction of Pierce Mortuary, Eureka, CA.
