

He was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, graduate of F. J. Reitz and a West Side Nut Club member. Albert was predominantly a practicing CPA since graduating from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1962 where he was a Lambda Chi. While in public accounting practice, in addition to tax planning, he did considerable work in merger and acquisition projects, including financial and succession planning. He founded and served as managing partner of Umbach and Vowells CPAs, which later became Umbach & Associates CPAs; Umbach Financial Group; and Umbach Mortgage. Albert helped organize and served four years as Chairman of Bank of Evansville, which was later acquired by German American Bank. Additionally, Albert served as Chairman of the Advisory Board when Banterra Bank opened their first Evansville branch.
In addition to his extensive business contributions to the Evansville community, Albert was also involved in numerous professional and civic organizations in addition to many roles within his church on both the local and national levels. Albert was on the EVSC Board of Trustees and served one term as President of the Board. He was instrumental in formation of the Public Education Foundation and served as its President the first several years. He served on the Board of Directors for Jacob’s Village and as a member of Southern Indiana Higher Education, Inc. (SIHE) which raised the funds to acquire the land where the USI campus now sits.
Albert’s passions included riding his quarter horses through long trails or around his westside farm, bicycling, and creating and tending to the home’s extensive landscape as a Southwest Indiana Master Gardner.
Albert was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Susan (Schaad) Umbach and sister Helen Marie (Umbach) Wortmann. He is survived by his daughter Anna Marie Courter (Erick); son A. John Umbach, III (Sara); grandchildren Emerson and Elias Courter and Emily Umbach Soap (Nehemiah) and Elise Umbach; several nephews and a niece.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, January 15, 2024 at 1:30 pm, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, officiated by Rev. Tom Wenig, with private burial in Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may visit from 9:30 am until service time.
