A Fairfield, Illinois native, Betty and her family moved to Evansville when she was very young. Friends and family described her as intelligent, funny, caring, and honest. She always stood up for herself and others, demonstrating a firm belief that no one should be taken advantage of. She spent much of her life caring for family members who were unwell or simply needed an extra hand, and she delighted in giving freely to charities. Her greatest delight, though, was her husband of 71 years, Carl Fuchs. He was in love with her from almost the first moment they met as kids, which she always said she found odd because she was extremely outspoken and honest, which most people took for “meanness.” Their home was always open to every child in the neighborhood. They cherished their children and grandchildren and valued family above all else. Betty and Carl’s love was unshakeable, surviving her two bouts of breast cancer, multiple open-heart surgeries, and her dementia, which cruelly robbed of her so much.
Betty is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Susan and Ray Smith, son and daughter-in-law Steve and Pennae Fuchs, her grandchildren Noah, Anna, Kate, Amanda, and Rebecca, and her great-granddaughter Sabrina.
Her family would like to thank the staff at Newburgh Healthcare, Deaconess VNA Hospice, and Around the Clock Care, who assisted her in living with much as dignity and peace as possible.
Visitation will be Friday, December 1 from 11am to 1:30pm at Alexander Funeral Home West. The funeral service will follow immediately after at 1:30pm
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or St. Labre Indian School.
