

Charles Leslie Mitchell, 91, of Meridian, MS, died on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Rush Foundation Hospital. Mr. Mitchell, a World War II Army Air Force veteran, retired as a District Car Supervisor on the C.S.X. Railroad after 42 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 ½ years, Nellie Ruth Taylor Mitchell. Deceased also are his father, Ezra Mitchell; his mother, Ida Belle Jones Mitchell; and his younger brother, Noble Mitchell, all of Harrisburg, IL; his older brother, Farris Mitchell of Metropolis, IL and his nephew, Tom Mitchell of Ridgeway, IL.
Mr. Mitchell was born and raised in Harrisburg, IL where, after serving in the military, he returned to work on the N.Y.C. Railroad. Mr. Mitchell moved to Evansville, IN in 1949 where he worked on the C&EI, L&N, and C.S.X. Railroads. He worked for the railroad from 1941 until his retirement in 1983.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Meridian. In Evansville he was a member of Grace Baptist Church from 1949 until 2009 where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Training Union Director. He also served as the Associational Training Union Director for the West Kentuckyana Association and the Southwestern Indiana Association for 13 years.
Mr. Mitchell and his wife, Nellie, were founders of the Indiana Campers on Mission. He served as President from 1980 until 1989, and then he served as Project Director, coordinating the volunteer mission construction work.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his two daughters, Carolyn Hendricks and her husband, Phil Hendricks of Meridian, MS and Shirley Huntsman and her husband, Ron Huntsman of Evansville, IN; three grandchildren, Charles (Chuck) Rhoads and his wife, Angie of Evansville, IN, Phillip Hendricks and his wife, Shirley Hodges of Laurel, MS, and Casey Hendricks of Meridian, MS; 4 great-grandchildren, Chance Rhoads, Ella Jane Rhoads, Mitchell Rhoads, and Sebastian Hendricks. Other survivors include his sister-in-law, Amanda Wilson of Harrisburg, IL; nephew, Tim Mitchell and his wife, Valerie of Harrisburg, IL and their family; niece, Becky Mitchell of Ridgeway, IL and her family; and niece, Brenda Anderson and her husband, Vernon of Murray, KY and their family.
Services will be 1:00PM, Monday, February 4, 2013, at Alexander North Chapel with burial in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Evansville, IN. Friends may visit, Sunday, February 3, 2013, from 5:00PM until 8:00PM at the funeral home.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Grace Baptist Church Food Bank, 1200 N. Garvin Street, Evansville, IN 47711 in lieu of flowers.
