Dorothy Mae Sandefur was born April 5, 1930 to Brandon and Hattie Tolliver on Old Henderson Rd. before her parents purchased property and moved to Redbank Rd. where she grew up. She departed this life for eternity on March 16, 2024.
She attended Lyles grade school through the eighth grade, which was a one-room school with one teacher named Mrs. Bolden. She graduated from Lyles grade school and attended Lincoln High School, graduating in 1948.
She worked various domestic jobs until she was hired at Regina’s, where she was employed for 21 years. She retired at the age of 54 to take care of her mother’s sister, Mammie Mallory.
In 1930, she attended Dove Chapel Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev. Nathan Tally. She accepted Christ at eleven years old and was baptized in the Ohio River. While at Dove Chapel, she served as the pianist for the Children’s Choir and Male Chorus. In 1945 at the age of fourteen, she joined Memorial Baptist Church where she served as pianist for the Children’s Choir, Male Chorus and the Church Choir. She remained an active member of Memorial Baptist Church where she sang with The Voices of Praise and Mass Choirs, and was a member of the “Forever Young” Ministry.
She was affectionately known as “Aunt Dorothy” or “Aunt Dot.” She had a way of letting you know how she felt about any situation. She was the type of person that felt like every-thing had its place and she wanted everything in its place. She loved to work, rather than be at home, church or other people’s homes. She loved mowing and trimming the church’s lawn and anyone else’s. She lived her life and believed that if she could help somebody along the way, then her living would not be in vain. Her favorite song was “Have Thine Own Way Lord.” She would often say, “I asked the Lord to place me where I need to be today.”
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Brandon and Hattie Tolliver; Brother, Charles Tolliver; Sister, Helen L. Martin and her companion of 47 years, Rivalle Schofield.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Robert C. Brush, Sr. (Ardell); Grandchildren: Robert Jr., Victor (Cynthia) and Veronica; Great-grandchildren: Summer, Nehemiah, Curtis and Olivia; Sister-in-law, Rita Tolliver; Extended Families: The Ricketts, Fingers, Payne and Robertsons. Special friends, Phyllis Reed, Jean Brown and Pam Schofield; other nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of family and friends.
