Miss Vinson, as we called her, at Harrison in 1963-1967 was the best mathematics teacher I have ever had.   In freshman year, I was in an experimental class where we taught ourselves algebra by working through so-called "programmed learning" workbooks.  It allowed me to go at my own speed and was a very successful approach for me.  She monitored our progress and gave lectures once a week.  It was a great experience for me to be free from the usual lockstep learning process.  Miss Vinson conveyed a joy of learning that quickly fired up the members of her classes.   Students would be literally jumping out of their seats to be the first ones to answer her insightful questions.  We were often wrong with our answers but she knew how to still make us feel as if we had contributed as she fished for the right answer among the other students.    I went on to study mathematics as my major at Northwestern along with computer science.  I give full credit to Miss Vinson for inspiring in me the joy of learning mathematics that I have never lost.   Thank you so, much, Edna Vinson.

Edna was my second cousin....she and my Dad were 1st cousins....she was always on the "cutting-edge" with technology...back in the 70's when we visited her, my great Aunt Lida, and cousin Tommy, they were the first people to show us what a PHOTOCOPIER was, as well as a CALCULATOR!  I remember being a little girl when I saw a newspaper clipping that my parents had received which announced that Edna Vinson had been selected as National Teacher of the Year!  Wow!!  That was in 1965.  I later became a teacher, too, and I am sure Edna was a phenomenal educator---she just had a way of connecting with young people. Ms Vinson was my mentor as a young teacher in the Evansville-Vanderbugh School Corporation. She placed me in a contact teacher position monitoring Title I mathematics programs for one year prior to my appointment as a building administrator in 1975. I called her my "godmother" as she was my leader,the educator for whom I held the highest of respect and a very dear friend. I owe so much of my success in education and in life to Ms Vinson.
 She always wanted me to call her Edna, but there are those persons who
who command such respect that you must address them with honor. Ms Vinson was a very special educator, lady and gift from God. What a blessing to my family, my community and to me that Ms Vinson crossed our lives path.

1956 was a banner year for me in at least one realm. I transfered from Reitz High School to my sophomore year in the brand new North High School.  Three names of perfectly wonderful and forever influencing people entered my life.  If you were there then you know them:  Edna; Carol; and Virgil.  Edna, your enthusiasm and passion for teaching your subject made a real impression on, and stayed with me, as I struggled along until I found my place in the sun.  For being such a mentor to me I do love you so!  In a slightly perverse way I am sorry to read of your steady advancement in the EVSC.  Lady, you belonged in the classroom TEACHING and INFLUENCING those "young skulls full of mush".  Oh well, you can now catch up to the one's that "got away".  Now you have an eternity of joy to get them corralled and to listen.  God Bless you Miss Vinson and rest easy:  "You have earned it!!!!".

I'll always remember the wonderful Christmas Eve gatherings our family enjoyed with Edna and Tom.  She was known by the Stabenfeldt boys as the "Fudge Lady."  What joy she, her brother and mother brought to our holiday celebration.  With loving memories I give thanks to God for Ms. Vinson.

Edna Vinson was my Department Head at Evansville Harrison (1964-1970). I was promoted to Department Head in 1970 and Edna became full-time Mathematics Supervisor for the EVSC, a position she retained until her retirement. She was a major player in my success as a mathematics teacher and as a department head. I say goodbye with the utmost respect to a wonderful lady.

I was a student of Miss Vinson at Bosse High School.  She was an excellent teacher and wonderful woman.  She has done much for many in education.  My sympathy to her family.
