A native of Evansville, Fred graduated from Central High School. He was an Army veteran and served during the Korean War as a medic stationed in Germany. He proudly participated in the Honor Flight of Southern Indiana in 2016.
Fred loved sports and was an avid fast-pitch softball catcher in his early years. He enjoyed following Indiana college sports teams, especially Indiana University, and frequently called his grandsons to check game times and channels. Family anchored his life, and he was instrumental in an ongoing Labor Day extended family celebration in Evansville that has continued for more than 70 years.
As a young man, Fred worked as a milkman with a route in Chandler. He also was an assembly line worker at International Harvester. Following his Army service, his employment included warehouse management for Dale Sales and Niehaus Forklift Parts.
Fred was a lifelong Lutheran and helped start Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church where he served in numerous church leadership roles. More recently, he was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Evansville.
Fred was a volunteer at the former Evansville State Hospital for many years, and later volunteered with the annual Lutheran Habitat for Humanity home builds, providing meals for workers once he couldn’t do the actual construction.
Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Betty Jean (Knote) of Westfield; their son Michael (Lee Ann) of Westfield; three grandsons, John (Taylor) of Westfield, Tim (Emily) of Westfield and Kurt (Nicole) of Indianapolis; two great-granddaughters, Hallie and Logan; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, at Alexander Funeral Home – North Chapel. A service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 10, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Park.
